Between holidays, birthdays and other occasions, gift-giving expenses can stack up. Gifts don’t always have to be stressful and costly. You have probably heard the phrase, “It’s the thought that counts,” and this often holds true. Giving meaningful gifts helps strengthen relationships with those you love regardless of cost. Use gifts to show someone how much you care about them rather than focusing on a price tag.  

Here are some budget-friendly gift ideas your loved ones will enjoy. 

  • Your favorite book. Giving someone your favorite book gives them a deeper look into who you are. However, new copies can be pricy. Try secondhand bookstores instead! If you don’t know of a local used bookshop, try searching on sites like Pangobooks or Thrift Books. 

  • Stickers from their favorite interests. Stickers are a great gift option, especially if you know the other person’s interests. You can find interest-specific stickers online for only a few dollars apiece. Your loved one will appreciate the thought as well as the unique designs. 

  • Favorite recipes and food. The recipes you use regularly can make a great gift. Recipe cards are fairly inexpensive, and you may already have some on hand. Remember, the thought counts with gifts, so try baking your favorite recipe for your friend or family member. They will appreciate the gesture, and the act of cooking can be relaxing.  

  • Mugs, coffee or tea. Whatever you drink, you likely have a particular brand you swear by, so make a gift of it! Mugs also make great gifts. You can give one you don’t use very often or check the thrift store—just be sure to wash it first. 

  • Hat and glove set.  Hats and gloves can make for a cheap but practical gift, especially if you thrift them. If you want to make them yourself, you can find video tutorials online to walk you through the process step by step. Your loved one will also appreciate the hard work. 

  • Self-care kit. Putting together a self-care kit for a friend can also be therapeutic for you. Consider including things like a coloring book, candles, bath salts, a journal, poetry or comedy books and a message telling them how much they mean to you. 

It’s important to note that sometimes you may not be able to give gifts at all, and that’s okay! Don’t be afraid to communicate with your loved ones and let them know that you’re thinking of them and love them. Offer to spend time with them instead and remember to care for yourself.
