Self-Awareness Month

Self-Awareness Month

Learning your emotional triggers, recognizing bad habits and focusing on the positives during a negative situation are some of the ways you can improve your wellbeing through self-awareness. September is Self-Awareness Month, which means it’s the perfect time to focus on you. Self-awareness means acknowledging and understanding your own behaviors, characteristics and feelings. Being aware of your actions, strengths and weaknesses can lead you towards self-improvement and a better state of being. Check out the tips below to see how you can improve your self-awareness.

  • Meditate. While mindfulness meditation can help reduce stress, depression and other mental health concerns, it can also increase self-awareness. Overthinking can lead to feelings of doubt and insecurity, but meditation can help clear your mind and instill a sense of calm. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and observe your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, to gain a better sense of self.

  • Reflect. Self-reflection is important every day. It can allow you to gain different insights about yourself and improve self-acceptance. The more time you spend with yourself, the better you can identify who you are, what you want in life, etc. Consider keeping a journal and writing down your goals, strengths and what’s important to you.

  • Be open to feedback. Acknowledge that greater self-awareness requires that you listen to and accept constructive criticism. This doesn’t mean changing yourself for others, but rather listening to suggestions and being open to improving. For example, if you struggle with talking in big groups, ask friends for suggestions on what you can do better.

  • Learn a new skill. As you grow older, you can develop a fixed mindset. This can make learning and growing challenging. Trying something new can allow you to form new experiences and hobbies and discover what you might be interested in. For example, consider taking art classes or joining a book club. Enhancing your creativity can help you connect with your imagination and form new ideas.

Remember that you are important. Being self-aware of your own behaviors, characteristics and faults can boost your mental health and improve your relationships.
