Strengthening Ties

Strengthening Ties

Whether it is with a significant other, friends, family members or coworkers, happy and healthy relationships can help improve your overall wellbeing. Having strong connections with other individuals allows you to feel more comfortable and relaxed, which allows you to cope better with feelings of stress, anxiety, depression and anger. Build better relationships with those around you by following the three ‘C’s’ below.

  • Communicate. You’ve probably heard that effective communication is key to any relationship, but this doesn’t simply mean ‘talking’. Good communication means really listening to what the other party has to say, why they are saying it and paying attention to non-verbal cues. Resist the urge to interrupt and try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes when listening. It’s helpful to remember that communication is also tied together by trust, empathy and respect.

  • Compromise. With any relationship comes compromise. For example, if you went to your favorite restaurant last time, next time let someone else pick. Sometimes, this means giving up what you want to help preserve your relationship. A crucial part of compromise also involves solving conflicts and practicing forgiveness. Avoid holding grudges, know when to accept blame and try to keep the atmosphere cordial.

  • Commitment. The final ingredient to fostering not only strong but long-lasting relationships is the willingness to invest your time and effort. Try dedicating your free time with those close to you. Check in with your loved ones regularly, arrive to engagements on time, be open, show vulnerability and demonstrate a willingness to help when needed. Much like a job, taking care of pets or playing a sport, relationships also require energy and care. Feeling both parties equally committed leads to stronger connections.

The three ‘C’s are a great starting point for strengthening social ties, but for further support, consider reaching out to your mental health provider or employee assistance program.
