Getting in the Halloween Spirit During COVID-19

Getting in the Halloween Spirit During COVID-19

Every year as the calendar creeps closer to Halloween, people of all ages start to don costumes and get ready to celebrate. However, as the coronavirus pandemic continues across the country, this year’s festivities are going to look a lot different. As with all things COVID-19, it’s disappointing that traditions have to adapt but that doesn’t have to mean a Halloween that’s no fun.

To help you, friends and family get in the spirit of the holiday, try some of these at-home activities that everyone can enjoy:

  • Get Dressed Up – just because you can’t attend a party or go trick-or-treating doesn’t mean costumes are out. Organizing a contest over video with family and friends or breaking out your acting skills in a virtual Halloween play is a fun way to get everyone involved while still being socially distant. If nothing else, have some fun and wear your costumes while running errands.

  • Get Your Decoration On – spending time decorating for the holiday can be an easy boost to your emotional wellbeing. Activities like a pumpkin carving (or painting) can still be fun virtually.  See who can come up with the best decorations for their bedroom. Coordinate with your neighbors to see if you can put together a contest for the best decorated front door in the complex or house in the neighborhood.

  • Get Creative with Trick-or-Treating – there are still clever ways to give your kids the same experience at home. Setting up bowls of your child’s favorite treats in different rooms around your home can let them get the same feeling of fun and celebration without the risk. Coming up with themes for each room so that everyone has to play a Halloween themed game or activity before getting their treats. You can even incorporate trick-or-treating into your outdoor decorations by setting a “candy graveyard” in the front lawn with decorated goodie bags for neighborhood children to take.

  • Get Outside – even though social distancing and other regulations may keep you physically away from other people, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Put your costumes on and take a walk or bike ride to stay active while also giving you a chance to enjoy the neighborhood decorations. Gather around a bonfire and tell scary stories or find your way out of a local corn maze.

Creativity is key to keeping traditions alive during the pandemic. With a little determination, this Halloween can still be one to remember.
