Self-care for men

Self-care is about taking time to rest, recharge and boost your mental health, something only 39% of men say they continuously make time for. It doesn’t have to involve taking a bath or face masks —although you can try that too! It’s about finding what works to improve your mood and help you feel like your best self.

Here are a few other ways to practice self-care.

  • Achieve a goal (big or small). Accomplishing a goal goes a long way in boosting your self-esteem. Try forming goals around your hobbies rather than responsibilities that may induce stress. This will help you unwind and feel accomplished in more areas of your life.

  • Engage in humor. Humor can help you cope with difficult situations as well as daily life. Try attending a comedy club or watching a funny show as a form of self-care.

  • Read a book. Reading is a great way to distance yourself from stress. If you’re unsure what you enjoy, try looking up recommendations based on your favorite movies or shows. Reading also engages your brain to improve concentration and memory.

  • Cook a meal. Cooking can be therapeutic and help ease anxiety while providing your body with much-needed nutrients. Give this simple Miso salmon recipe a try for dinner with peanut butter cups for dessert!

  • Limit screen time. Social media use has been linked to increased depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns. Care for your mental health by being mindful of how much time you spend on your phone. Setting time limits and alerts will help you remember to reengage with the outside world.

  • Take a mental health day. Taking a mental health day can help improve your overall productivity at work and home and ease stress. Try using the day to go fishing, hiking, hanging out with loved ones or whatever else you find enjoyable.

The best thing you can do for your mental health is to be kind to yourself. Give yourself grace when you feel you have fallen short. Manage your expectations and recognize when your mind and body need a break.
