Fall Asleep Faster with 4-7-8 Breathing

Fall Asleep Faster with 4-7-8 Breathing

Life is hectic and many of us find it difficult to fall asleep at night. We replay the events of the day in our mind or worry about our responsibilities for the next day.

The 4-7-8 breathing technique, developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, is a breathing pattern that forces our mind on regulating our breath. This will help bring our bodies back to balance and relax.  Practice the following 4-7-8 breathing steps in one breathing cycle:

  1. With your lips apart and tongue against your top front teeth, make a whooshing sound as you completely exhale through your mouth.
  2. Next, close your lips and inhale silently through your nose as you count to four in your head.
  3. Then, hold your breath for seven seconds.
  4. Slowly exhale from your mouth for eight seconds while make another whooshing sound.

Initially, start out with four breath cycles and gradually build up to 8 full breaths. When practiced regularly, it’s possible that the 4-7-8 breathing technique can help you fall asleep faster.
